Practice Areas
Felonies & Misdemeanors
- A felony is a crime that is punishable by more than one year in prison. Severe felonies may be punishable by the death penalty or life imprisonment.
- A misdemeanor is a lesser criminal charge that is punishable by less than one year in prison and/or a fine.
Drug Offenses
- Drug related crimes involve illegal use of controlled substances legal (e.g., prescription medications) or illegal (e.g., marijuana or heroin).
Driving Under the Influence (DUI)
- The definition, charges, and penalties for driving under the influence (DUI) vary by state and depend on a number of factors.
Assault
- Assault is a crime involving the infliction of physical injury to another.
Homicide
- Murder is a type of homicide in which someone unlawfully, and intentionally or wantonly kills another person. Murder may be combined with other charges.
Death Penalty
- Capital punishment, also known as the death penalty, is a state-sanctioned practice of killing a person as a punishment for a crime.
Federal Crimes
- A federal crime is prosecuted under federal law, not state. Federal charges can come from crimes committed on federal lands, or from offenses like tax evasion.
Criminal Appeals
- Appeals are petitions for a higher court to review a prior judgment. The appellate court can uphold or overrule the lower court's judgment, refuse to review it, and/or remand the case back to the lower court for additional factual findings.
Expungement
- Expungement makes a criminal record invisible to most people searching for it. State laws differ on the exact process, and what kinds of offenses are eligible.
Civil Rights and Liberties
- Civil rights can be thought of as the legal implementation, in the form of laws, of the civil liberties guaranteed in the U.S. Constitution, Bill of Rights, and the Kentucky Constitution.
